The myCompass program has been developed by the Black Dog Institute to help people better self-manage mild-to-moderate symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress.

The program is freely available on any Internet-enabled device, including computers, tablets (e.g. iPads) and mobile phones.

The program supports real-time self-monitoring of problem thoughts, feelings and behaviours, and provides 24/7 access to evidence-based skill building modules and other self-help resources.

  • Fully automated (no therapist input), self-help, cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) program for mild-to-moderate depression, anxiety and stress.
  • Available on any Internet-enabled device, including mobile phones, tablets and desk-topcomputers
  • No registration fee (minimal data downloading charges may apply)
  • No referral needed
  • Accessible at www.mycompass.org.au
  • Funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health

myCompass is suitable for people who meet the following criteria:

  • Depressive, anxious and/or stress symptoms in the mild-to-moderate range
  • Aged 18 – 75 years
  • Read English with ease
  • Minimal technical skill
  • Ready access to Internet enabled devices (e.g., desk-top computer with an Internetconnection, tablet, and/or smartphone)

People with severe symptoms are not excluded from using myCompass, however, myCompass is not a crisis service, nor a substitute for face-to face care. it is recommended that severely distressed patients use the program as an adjunct to face-to-face care.

  • Registration is free
  • Users are not charged for SMSs received
  • Minimal data downloading changes may be applied by a user’s Internet provider
  • Research evidence shows that myCompass significantly reduces mild-to-moderate symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress, and improves work and social impairment.
  • Treatment gains following use of myCompass have been shown to persist for three months

  • Familiarise yourself with myCompass, so that you know the key program features and how the program works.
  • Refer suitable patients to myCompass, either by emailing them a link to the program or providing them printed program information.
  • Show your patients what myCompass looks like on your desk-top computer, tablet or mobile phone.
  • Follow-up with your patients about their use of myCompass. Ask about any difficulties they are having and/or gains being made.
  • In addition to referring people with established mental health problems to the program, recommend it to people that you feel might be vulnerable by virtue of family history, lifestyle, personality and/or social-environmental factors.
